The Process Scheduler vs. Other Scheduling Solutions

Product
TPS
  • TPS is totally secure:  it has no user interace to your data, so when it's running, it does not leave the accounting system exposed
  • Lets you save job configurations, so that, once you've created your job settings, a single click start the entire job
  • Does not require an addition user license
  • Does not require purchase of DPS
DPS
  • Cannot schedule tasks
  • All tasks run right away
  • Only a limited number of reports and maintenance tasks can be run
  • Does not log tasks
  • Cannot reschedule tasks that do not complete or fail
  • Can only send one job-at-a-time and one company-at-a-time
  • If not a Business Ready Licensed site, must be purcahses separately
  • Cannot email reports
  • Cannot send email notifications of job completion
  • Cannot email posting or maitenance reports showing results of a task.
Windows Scheduled Task or Windows "at" command
  • Your scheduled task automatically launches Dynamics, logs in and runs a macro
  • Requires much manual work: This method completely depends on macros, so you must manually program the macro
  • It is not secure: In order to automatically login to Dynamics, you must include the user id and password in the macro. The user id and password are stored unencrypted, and are easily readable by any user that has access to the computer, so that users that may have access to your computer systems also gain access to your financial system
  • It adds to the cost of the solution, because the macro must login and therefore requires that you purchase an addition Licences User
  • The macro can easily fail, and you cannot always be sure whether or not the task finished. Macros are not predictable, and can often fail if data is changed in the company (for example, if a report option is added or removed, the macro will print the wrong report)
  • Macros may not behave the same for every company, so if you have multiple companies, you have to create different macros for each companies
  • You can only schedule one macro at-a-time, because the macro must be the active application or it will fail
  • A macro can fail if a screen-saver starts, or if another application (such as a system dialog) opens a window
  • Macros do not easily upgrade, so you may need to re-record the macro when you upgrade to a new version
  • Macros do not let you change which printer is used, and will always use the default printer
Binary Stream Only works with Sales Order Processing
Dynamics GP Reports Scheduler
  • Only prints certain reports
  • Saves reports to a location for you to view separately vs. having the report emailed to you
Dynamics GP Business Portal
  • Only emails documents (doesn't automate the printing process)
  • Complex setup
  • Usually requires a separate server
  • Does not syncrhonize email addresses with Dynamics GP
  • Only works with Sales Order Processing documents
